The 600-member GP reports to the president's office. However, after the assassination of President Abdallah on November 26, 1989, the GP, under Colonel Denard's command, controlled the country. After assuming responsibility for Comorian security in December 1989, France announced that the GP would be limited to a representative role with a reduced number of troops. The 500- member National Police Force (Force de Police Nationale) is headquartered in Moroni, with detachments in the other islands. Data as of August 1994
