Rupert: You personify the successful integration of foreign talent and brainpower into our great democracy, and are a model of foreign assimilation of American values. Youve bridged the gap[2] and moved beyond it, as has no one else. In fact you may know us better than we know ourselves! And so now wed also like to know you a little better. Mr. Chopra, congratulations and welcome to Wolf News, its a pleasure to have you in the studio.
Deepak: Thank you Rupert, it feels great to be here.
Rupert: Well Hindu missionaries in the States have come a long way since the Marharishi Mahesh Yogi of the sixties fame. It's no longer a question of simple dabbling and experimenting but more of real assimilation for us. Do you think this slow process of de-Christianisation will be drawn out much longer?
Rupert: There is no question that your knowledge of religion is extraordinary. So is there a hidden rationale here too?
Rupert: But why do you so frequently quote and refer to Hebrew, Christian, Buddhist, and Muslim teachings when here in the West where you live there are so many who are ready and desirous of hearing you speak, write and express your sound Vedic understanding plainly and uncluttered by the trimmings of other beliefs?
Deepak: Quite simply so that they may be sound in the faith, as the apostle says.[11]
Rupert: Well you must be something of an apostle
yourself, in fact a global apostle; so please explain to us how we can become
sound in the faith?
Deepak: Awakening is at the root of the worlds
religions. It unites prophets, messiahs, and saints into a privileged elite.[12]
St. John Chrysostom says somewhere: This then is soundness, to introduce
nothing spurious, nor foreign.[13] But obviously in our age of ever increasing immigration what is
foreign is already as equally the norm and valid as what is familiar, so since
there is no turning back now, why not enjoy it? Elsewhere the same saint says of Saint Paul:
And as to the question, why does he cite the testimonies of the Greeks?[14]
It is because we put them most to confusion when we bring our testimonies and
accusations from their own writers, when we make those their accusers, who are
admired among themselves.[15]
My answer though is that Im just trying to make a point from their place of
reference so as to clarify - not confuse people who for the most part are
already confused. Until clarity dawns, a certain amount of confusion is always
present.[16] So there
needs to be a more dramatic event, such as a heaven that suddenly opens up, or
divine messengers who descend from on high.[17]
Rupert: What exactly do you mean by this?
Deepak: I mean that to the Christians I become as a
Christian, and again as the apostle says: to the Jews I became as a Jew, that
I might gain Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, not being
myself under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law; to them
that are without law, as without law, not being without law to God, but under
law to Christ, that I might gain them that are without law. To the weak I
became weak, that I might gain the weak: I am become all things to all men,
that I may by all means save some,[18]
from unhealthy confusion which masquerades as soundness of faith.
Rupert: Yeah, but do you really think it is worth your
trouble? For as you say in your book: to date, after many centuries of saints,
sages, and seers, only a few individuals can open to radical change in their
belief system, while most cannot.[19]
Moreover you say: the inner life can never be a common experience.[20]
Plus, that saints: have the ability to live in the light while the rest of us
cannot.[21] As well as:
Complete control over the mind is unachievable.[22]
And finally that: there is no shorter path to God.[23]
The sheep might just become more confused and get nowhere.
Deepak: Of course it's worth it! Dont you know that
these men are the servants of the most high God, which show unto us the way of
salvation?[24]
Rupert: Come on now! Dont make me laugh! If you
seriously believed that, youd become a Christian, while in fact youre a rich
corporate Indian jetsetter. You know youd have no chance of selling them raw
Hinduism, and that youre targeting American wealth and naivety couldnt be
more obvious than in your Seven Spiritual Laws of Success, which you
promise can easily be applied to create success in all areas of your life.[25]American
marketing expertise has made you a rich man; you should be humbly thanking us.
And you may recall that the same apostle also says: And no marvel; for even
Satan fashions himself into an angel of light. It is no great thing therefore
if his ministers also fashion themselves as ministers of righteousness,[26]
whether its for power, glory, or the lowly greenback. Relax, and just enjoy
yourself, youre normal!
Deepak: Indeed, it is possible to suffer much from the righteous, even from Christ, take Pilates wife: Have thou nothing to do with that righteous man; for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him.[27] Obviously this makes him all the more unsympathetic, for his anger against Adam and Eve is irrational in its harshness.[28] Another irony is at work here however. The only character in the episode of Eve and the apple who seems to tell the truth is the serpentThe serpent is holding out a world of awareness, independence, and decision making. All these things follow when you have knowledge. In other words, the serpent is advising Gods children to grow up, and of course this is a temptation they cannot resist. Who could?[29]
Rupert: You call that irony; sounds like an ordinary
case of blasphemy to me. Besides why should we let that snake teach us to grow
up as you call it, but prematurely, and not let God mature us in his good
time? You wouldnt be trying to break down the resistances of our faith by your
marketing strategy would you Deepak?
Deepak: Make a commitment to follow the path of no
resistance. This is the path through which natures intelligence unfolds
spontaneously, without friction or effort. When you have the exquisite
combination of acceptance, responsibility, and defenselessness, you will
experience life flowing with effortless ease. When you remain open to all
points of view not rigidly attached to only one your dreams and desires
will flow with natures desiresThis is the Law of Least Effort.[30]
Rupert: Natures intelligence?
Deepak: The intelligence that courses through you is
turning you into what you are going to be.[31]
Rupert: Since we no longer believe as you do in demons,
weve given up the terrestrial search, but we are still looking for some signs
of extraterrestrial intelligence, is that what you mean?
Deepak: We are now ready to understand divine intelligence directly.[32]
Rupert: And how do you suggest we do that?
Deepak: For those listening from afar, if you would
like the opportunityto have a more direct experience of divinity, you may do
so interactively at my Web site.[33]
But for you Rupert, if you only knew it, Gods most cherished secrets are
hidden inside the human skull.[34]
Some version of my memory, however faint, has transferred itself to you. You
saw an image, you felt a feeling. How did an event supposedly trapped inside my
skull get inside yours without passing through something in between?[35]
God and your soul are in perfect communication.[36]
Rupert: Boy! Are you trying hard! Cant you relax?
☆ ★ ✫ ✩ ✯
Rupert: What with rampant hedonism, lovingly opposing my competitive neighbour, and unstoppable covetousness the norm in the US, it seems highly unlikely that any lasting discipline could be mustered to effectively transcend this liberating lifestyle.
Deepak: Loopholes exist.
Rupert: Loopholes?
Deepak: Every religious tradition contains such
loopholes, escape roots into a world beyond ours.[37]
Rupert: Can you give me an example?
Deepak: Saints do not have to obey any conventional
standard of behavior. In India there exists the left-hand path to God. On
this path a devotee shuns conventional virtue and goodness. Sexual abstinence
is often replaced with sexual indulgence (usually in a highly ritualized way).
One might give up a loving home to live in a graveyard; some tantric devotees
go so far as to sleep with corpses and eat the most repulsive decayed
foodChristian missionaries shuddered to look upon [the god] Kali with her
necklace of skulls and blood dripping from her fangs. What kind of mother was
this? But the left-hand way is thousands of years old, its origins in sacred
texts that exhibit as much sacred wisdom as any in the world.[38]
Rupert: If there were any doubt, Id have to say either you are more advanced, or vastly more primitive than us; at any rate, well need time, to either catch up or move further away from the threat. But you are obviously hooked! Youre incredible!
Deepak: The primitive belief found throughout the
ancient and pagan world -may contain the highest truth.[39]
Find such a hole and jump through it. Then God will be obvious.[40]
Rupert: Or the lowest lie. No thanks; I think Ill stick with the God I know now, even if He isnt so obvious to you.
☆ ★ ✫ ✩ ✯
Rupert: You write: the worlds greatest saints and
masters may be simply enjoying themselves.[41]
So what do you get out of it then?
Deepak: Eh! Apart from a stable income, a little
humble acknowledgement and sometimes an innocent pleasure, nothing much.
Rupert: Come on, youre kidding me, so youre just an
ordinary person like me or you?[42]
Be honest Deepak youre a huge success, youre a winner, youve got it made;
you really expect me to believe there is no gimmick? no ulterior motive? no
scheming? Why do you live here in the US in first place?
Deepak: Just because I live in the US doesnt mean Im
American through and through. Of course there is an element of freakishness to
all outsiders, because we define normality by being accepted.[43]
Rupert: Yeah but when you speak to them in the language
of their beliefs you do get their attention and if you just happen to
understand religion better than they do they will credit you for this and thus
you may gain a few souls.
Deepak: Their gain not mine; I believe Im just doing
what their chief apostle did who said: Bear ye one anothers burdens, and so
fulfill the law of Christ.[44]
So I bear their heavier guilt-laden[45]
Christianity - for example, - in the hope of making their yoke a much lighter
Far Eastern one. Stripped of religious coloration, being saved is the same as
awakening in consciousness, a perceptual leap that makes God real instead of
doubtful.[46] There is
nothing selfish or dishonest here.
Rupert: But in what you call your Global Network
for Spiritual Success you modestly state: we could soon reach a
critical mass of people that could transform life on planet earth.[47]
The skys the limit eh! Seems like you have vertigo doc, unless maybe youre
the antichrist? Youre just preying on their beliefs and weaknesses.
Deepak: How could that be when I also believe and
tremble[48] before
their God? Also, you might argue that just because God is seen in a certain
way by us, that doesnt mean he is that way.[49]
Although it's a fact that we have all gotten used to
the absence of the sacred.[50]
Rupert: Yeah I can see that - must
be why you dont have a tradition of holy relics!
Still, unless you yourself have gone past Stage
Four, you must also be subject to the laws of your own beliefs and your theory
that your greatest temptation is: Deception. And, if youre confused: this is
meant both in terms of self-deception and deceiving others.[51]
OK, so you know God, but that doesnt mean you have real hard-earned virtue.
In the Gospel the possessed were among the first to confess that Christ is the
Holy One of God.[52]
Deepak: Look; they say humility is a virtue, right? Well
Im humble and proud of it. And it should be pointed out that miracle working
is accessible before sainthood.[53]
Rupert: Words have a hard time at the quantum level.[54]
You cant fool me youre just like all the rest.
Deepak: Well if the rest are righteous yes, for in
every nation he that fears him, and works righteousness, is acceptable to him.[55]
In fact the establishment of the network represents the fulfillment of one of
my most cherished dreams.[56]
Rupert: But worldly people aspire to be everywhere,[57]
and fanatics are always obsessed by other peoples purity, opening an endless
quest to police human imperfections.[58]
No youre a con man; youre exploitive and aggressive.
Deepak: To aggress is a sin? And what about the
kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and men of violence take it by force?[59]
Besides the soul journey is guided by an inner passion that demands its own
fulfillment.[60] One could
say that love and cruelty are so interwoven that the psyche cant separate
them.[61]
At any rate, if Im ever aggressive its when I wasnt myself [so] the action didnt belong to me.[62]
Rupert: Oh yeah, so who did it belong to?
Deepak: Alter egos must come from a region beyond
personal experience; they are like voluntary incarnations or partial incarnations
activated from the storehouse of the mind field.[63]
From the perspective of the mind field, if an alter ego is strong enough, it
can actually change the body to conform to it.[64]
Rupert: You mean to aggression?
Deepak: I mean that every thought could be traced back
to its source at a deeper level.[65]
Rupert: And whats your source?
Deepak: That great outsider, God himself.[66]
Rupert: You expect us to believe that? If your source
is God then Im a saint; moreover you just lost your claim to humility you
could try revising Stage Five where you will find that on page 133 your
biggest hurdle is self-importance.
Deepak: To have God inside you must be the highest
joy. Yet it isnt.[67]
God, it turns out, isnt a person; God is a process.[68]
God is never to be met in person,[69]
so the real question is whether he might be here already and going unnoticed.[70]
Rupert: You realize that you are attacking the very theological and Christological foundations of Christianity that Gods mode of existence is hypostatic, i.e. personal? Though perhaps your mind, made insensitive by its conditioning, may not let you see this,[71] because an adopted belief system is having its say; the source of those beliefs father, mother, coach, teacher, guru still has a voice in your head, repeating the tenets you are holding on to.[72] You should practice letting go of your old beliefs.[73]
Deepak: I have steered clear of dogma, knowing full
well that Christians do not automatically accept an Eastern belief such as Karma,
just as Hindus and Buddhists do not accept a Western belief like Judgment Day.
If there is one God there still cannot be one path.[74]
Rupert: Granted you have your own beliefs and agenda, but the teaching that God is personal, is a pivotal dogma that distinguishes Christianity from non-Christian faiths, if you take that away were no longer Christian. So if your steering is not at fault, something else is; nobodys perfect - except you know who and hidden agendas have an embarrassing tendency to diminish ones sincerity.
Deepak: There is a hidden meaning behind all events,
and this hidden meaning is serving your own evolution.[75]
And a helpful way to maintain that state of self-referral is to keep your desires
to yourself; do not share them with anyone else unless they share the exact
same desires that you have and are closely bonded with you.[76]
As I said previously it had become evident without a doubt that God existed,
not as a person but as an infinite intelligence moving at infinite speed
through infinite dimensions, a creator modern physics could come to terms with
as well.[77]
Rupert: Indeed for many, material or abstract science is a religion to
support their lack of faith. But you and I know better. Lets be honest, what
you are describing with some hyperbole - is clearly the non-human
intelligence of apostate beings of the powers of the air, of the spirit that now works in the sons of
disobedience, [78] as the apostle says. Your god Shiva the destroyer, known to be one
of the three primal gods of India as you state,[79]
is for us one of the world
rulers of this present darkness.[80]
I feel sorry for you Deepak. Hasnt anyone had the heart to tell you that you
are enslaved to beings that by nature are no gods,[81]
which, have the spiritual energy our modern physics doesnt yet recognize?[82]
Deepak: To anyone who worships God as the self, it is
obvious that none of us are alone. The self isnt personal ego but a
pervasive presence that cannot be escaped.[83]
Rupert: And as long as you continue to identify with
this presence and worship it, will it continue to captivate and confuse you.
Youre being used, Deepak wake up.
Deepak: Believe me Rupert, you and I are nothing but
saints in the making.[84]
Rupert: Yeah! by your standards perhaps, but what sort
of saint would that be?
Deepak: I dont believe saints and mystics are really
so different from other human beings.[85]
Rupert: You may be wrong.
Deepak: On a spiritual basis, being good is never
wrong. But in terms of sheer effectiveness which means trying to wake up with
the fewest delays, obstacles, and backsliding adopting the right belief is
much more powerful.[86]
Rupert: I realize now youre being honest with me for
once, but Im not buying it. To me youre just a computer made of meat.[87]
Deepak: I see, it seems the lump of consciousness
that [ I ] form is too large to handle,[88]
for you. Still not buying into your own story is goodMeher Baba, an Indian
master aligned with Sufism, taught that the only prerequisite for waking up was
total disillusionment.[89]
Rupert: Yeah you are beginning to make me
sleepy. Could this be my defenses at work? Or maybe a form of enlightenment at
odds with yours?
Deepak: The Bhagavad-Gita informs us that there are
no outward signs of enlightenment.[90]
Still we all assume that we are the authors of our thoughts.[91]
Rupert: And if youre not the author of your thoughts
where do they come from?
Deepak: You call it Heaven.
Rupert: And have you located it yet?
Deepak: Its right here staring you in the face; wake
up Rupert! Here the mystic Jews searching for the Shekhinah meet the Buddhists
in their search for satori, and when they arrive, the ancient Vedic seers will
be waiting in the presence of Shiva, along with Christ and his father.[92]
Rupert: What was that you just said? You know I think
you have a really blasphemous tongue.
Deepak: Your enemy is not evil but lack of
attention.[93] For God is
in the evil as much as the good.[94]
And whatever you take your attention away from will wither, disintegrate, and
disappear.[95] In all
these cases, however, there is an understanding that only one thing is being
worshiped the self [96]
Rupert: I never met anyone so starved for self-esteem!
Deepak, Im sorry but your social mask thrives on approval. It wants to
control, and it is sustained by power, because it lives in fear.[97]
And yeah come to think of it maybe you are an enemy combatant of sorts I
wonder whether Homeland Security can deal with this one?
☆ ★ ✫ ✩ ✯
Deepak: There is no observer separate from the
observation. Everything around us is the product of who we are.[98]
Rupert: Well if it was my responsibility you wouldnt
be around much longer because I dont like some of your answers.
Deepak: The only viable answer, as Schlitz saw it, must
lie in the researcher himself. The outcome depended on who you are.[99]
Rupert: Dont turn the tables on me; I dont know
exactly who or what you are, but Ive had just about enough of your arrogant
omniscience.
Deepak: True arrogance is a sign of spiritual health,
how else could I understand Christianity as well as I do, and how long will it
take you to understand me. A Doctor of the Christian Church says:
And yet truly being able by ones virtue to overcome the incorporeal powers,
would be enough to lead to arrogance; or rather arrogance it would not be, for
with good reason am I high-minded, and exceedingly high-minded against the evil
spirit. And behold even Paul, how high-minded he was against that evil spirit.[100]
Rupert: Just what I said and expected; you took the
word right out of my mouth. Look, before this gets ugly you old devil
Deepak: Gurus and masters are scarce; the legacy of
wisdom has been shelved in books.[101]
Rupert: Yours I presume. Look Chopra, its time you
shut up, just take all your books and get out of here, youre not going to win
any disciples here at Wolf News.
Deepak: But Jesuswanted the human wolves to lie down
with the lambs.[102]
Once you do this, every so-called upsetting situation will become an
opportunity for the creation of something new and beautiful, and every
so-called tormentor or tyrant will become your teacher.[103]
Rupert: Silence!...Phew!this guy just doesnt give
up!
Deepak: But Im telling you Jesus stated the law of
Karma quite succinctly,[104]
and is adamantly opposedin general to work.[105]

Rupert: Hey! Chopra I said shut up!
Deepak: But the guru performed the same miracle as
Jesus[106]
Rupert: er well
take a commercial break and be back in three minutes.

Deepak meets Pollyanna Finklebrain
Deepak: Hi! How you doing? Hey look Polly; I wanna give
you my new book. What? Youre not sure you want it! But why? And I suppose God
told you not to read any books on the US market?
And the woman said unto the serpent
Pollyanna: Of the writings of the books of the Church we
may read: but of the writings of the book which is a bestseller on the market,
God said, you shall not read of it, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.[107]
Deepak: Hey Polly relax! Look, Im human too, just
like you. Flesh and bones are demanded of the five senses.[108]
See my hands and my feet, that it's me! Touch me, and see; for a spirit does
not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.[109]
And after thirty years in the States Im damn well just as American pie as you
are. Look, you dont have to read my book, just flip through it, or give it to
a friend.
Pollyanna: Deep-pak, Im afraid, if I read your book How
to Know God, I may die spiritually, as a Christian.
Deepak: You shall not surely die: for God knows that
on the day you read it, your eyes will be opened, and you will be as God,
knowing good and evil are just the same thing. God created both because both
are needed.[110]
Pollyanna: But Deep-pack, Im scared!
Deepak: Its OK honey, its OK; youve got nothing to
worry about. Everything is gonna be all right. I just want the best for you;
you know that. I just want to help you.
Pollyanna: I like you De-pack, butgee I dont know.
Well, all right Deepy. But Im still afraid.
Deepak: OK Polly, now hold my hand. Thats it honey.
Pollyanna: Deep-pack, do you really know God? I mean, you
sound so strange.
Deepak: I have yet many things to say to you, but ye
cannot bear them now.[111]
Pollyanna: You sound kind of weird.
Deepak: And now, look into my eyes Polly, yeah thats it.
See, Im not gonna hurt you. Im your friend. Were in this together. We need
each other. Now repeat after me what Im going to say to you, just repeat the
very same sound. Are you ready? OK lets do it: OMMM Did you get that? OK, now
you try. Come on honey you can do it. Try! No? OK, Ill say it again, are you
ready? OK here we go: OMMMM OMMMMMM..OMMMMMM.
Now give it another try honey. what? You want
to do it together? OK then lets do it together: one, two, three:
OMMMMMMMMMOMMMMMMMMMMM
Well, youre doing fine, and thatll be your
first lesson. You see how easy it is! Theres nothing to be scared of! Now lets
go and get a hamburger!
Later at the Hamburger Joint
Deepak: You see Polly no one needs to go to India to
find God; India comes out to meet you, like the father came out to meet his
prodigal son, or when Kali comes for her daughter.
Pollyanna: Thanks Deepak, youre a really swell guy, and
kind of cute. If you ever become President, can I be your First Lady?
Deepak: UMMM ARRRR OMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.

fact actually closer to the Hindu understanding, - is where one is only accountable
or blameworthy, plus subject to negative consequences, like
mortality. The notion of guilt in the Christian West gradually replaced
the notion of being related to God from enmity as in apostasy. Ever
